The construction of St. Peter's Basilica took more than a century of work, its design began when Pope Julius II commissioned a competition for the design of what was to become the most majestic building in Christendom, the winner of the competition was Donato Bramante, and the first stone was laid in 1506. A series of deaths and personnel changes led to the change of architects, passing from Bramante to Raphael to finally arrive at Michelangelo in the year 1547.
