Chocolate has played a major role in the social and economic world of Barcelona and the museum dedicated to it clearly shows it. The Catalan capital was once the initial port of distribution of this cocoa-based dessert. At the Chocolate Museum (Museu de la Xocolata) you will discover everything possible and imaginable about this delicious (and historically important) food. And yes: you can certainly taste some!

Located in the former convent of Sant'Agostino, the Chocolate Museum takes you on a tasty journey through the world of chocolate, showing you its nutritional and medicinal aspects. Yes, you read that right, chocolate is officially good for your health. In fact, in the eighteenth century the members of the army and the Bourbon military academies received a daily ration: "At breakfast all the cadets and officers of the companies will receive an ounce and a half of chocolate with a quarter of a pound of bread ..." The mission of the Chocolate Museum is to disseminate the history of this fantastic product and to preserve the tradition of Catalan confectionery production. A truly noble mission, isn't it? And the people who curate this museum know what it's about: it's an initiative of the Guild of Pastry Chefs of Barcelona. Don't forget to stop by the museum café for a hot chocolate and to buy a supply of delicious chocolate.
